About Our Projects: Cleaning Up Rivers

There is a common theme among urban waterways. It is a troubling reality: massive amounts of plastic waste polluting these resources.

What they can be and what they are examples:

On our own visits over the years, we were shocked to see rivers littered with plastic debris of all kinds - sandals, straws, styrofoam, bottles, and food packaging. Plastic gets tangled in willows and buried in the soil — making it incredibly hard to remove.

Even more alarming, 70% of all ocean waste originates from land sources. That means it's not just fishing boats causing the problem — it’s plastic waste from streets and storm drains, down creeks, streams and rivers, then carried to the sea.

And the problem doesn’t stop there. Earth.org reports that global plastic consumption has skyrocketed to about 300 million tonnes annually, with up to 11 million tons ending up in our oceans. In one part of the world, this results in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

This "patch" is a swirling mass of plastic debris roughly 1.6 million square kilometers wide — that's larger than Texas and California combined — and it traps millions of tons of plastic waste, some dating back decades.
